History of the Robin’s Nest
The Glenfruin Farm was owned by the Mason family for around half a century, for which the Robin’s Nest Guest House was the old farm house. The estate portion of the farm was sold in May 1995.
The Robin’s Nest was named after the Cape Robin, or Cosypha Caffra. You will see many of these cheerful and curious little birds in the Gardens surrounding the Guest House.
If allowed they will come to within a meter of you. Distinguished by white eyebrows, orange upper breast and greyish underparts; in flight showing orange tail-feathers and back. Adolescent Cape Robins have a pale orange breast spotted with black. The Cape Robin has a pleasant and continuing song, each passage starting on the same note and with the phrase “Jan-Frederick” often repeated. It jerks its tail up when alert.
